What to Know Before Renting a Crane in Kigali

Choosing the right crane capacity, preparing your site and planning a safe lift.

Hiring a crane is straightforward when you have the right information ready. This checklist helps you choose the right crane, prepare your site in Kigali or elsewhere in Rwanda, and get an accurate quote quickly.

1. Know your load

The single most important figure is the weight of the heaviest item, including any lifting frame or packaging. Add its dimensions and where its lifting points are. If you only have an estimate, say so — we'll factor in a safety margin.

2. Capacity depends on reach, not just weight

A crane's rated capacity falls as the load moves further from the crane. A crane that lifts a heavy load close in may lift much less at full reach. So tell us how far the crane must reach (from where it can stand to where the load goes) and how high it must be lifted. This is why two jobs with the same weight can need different cranes.

3. Prepare the site

  • Access: can a crane truck reach the set-up point? Note gates, slopes, tight turns and soft ground.
  • Set-up space: the crane needs room to extend its outriggers fully on firm, level ground.
  • Ground conditions: recently filled ground, trenches or soft soil may need mats or a different position.
  • Overhead hazards: power lines, trees and structures near the lift path.
  • Exclusion zone: space to keep people clear of the load during the lift.

4. Plan the lift

Agree who on site is responsible, what time the lift happens, and how the load will be rigged and landed. Our crane operators are experienced with structural, equipment and utility lifts and will confirm the plan with you before lifting.

5. Combine transport and lifting

If the item also needs moving, one company can deliver and lift it — for example a crane truck that delivers and offloads a generator, or heavy haulage plus a mobile crane on site.
